Come on get snap happy

I don’t know about you but we seem to have loads and loads of photos all over the place and I've been meaning to organise them for a while now. Which is why I was so excited to discover Photobox’s personalised Photobooks.

They’re just fab. Basically you choose which photos to include (you can have anything from 26 to 100 pages holding up to 1200 photos), and then customize each page with captions, backgrounds, fonts, colours and layouts (or you can autofill if you’re pushed for time).

Then they send the book back to you, beautifully bound, like a coffee table book. Uploading the pics can take a little time but the end results are definitely worth it.

The photo books start at £23.99 plus P&P, but if you order through KidStart you get 5% back for your kids and 2 for 1 on Photobooks and canvas prints. PLUS all orders taken in March will be entered into a draw to win one of four £50 vouchers. Click here for more info.

Why Jade's will is an important reminder to all parents

It's hard to believe that it's been nearly a year since Jade Goody died.

I met her a couple of times, and I can honestly say she was one of the most genuine celebrities I've ever encountered. Which is why it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that she has left the bulk of her fortune to her boys.

Her children were her whole world. Unlike other celebs who seem hooked on the publicity, from the moment she became a mum Jade saw her fame as a job, an opportunity to provide for her sons. Everything she did was for them. She was the Real Mum Deal.

Jade's other legacy, of course, was to remind us all of the importance of regular smear tests.

But I think that knowing about the contents of her will is actually an important reminder of why we all need to make sure our children are properly provided for, even if we haven't got million pound fortunes. No one likes to think about the worst possible scenario, but when you have kids of course you have to, and I'm ashamed to say I've been putting it off and putting it off.

That's it. It's on my To Do list for this week.

How to cut the cost of raising kids

A report came out yesterday that said it now costs £200k to raise a child. £200k! While I think that's probably really only the case for a very small percentage of the population there's no getting away from the fact that raising kids IS expensive. Even with the most careful budgeting, there is always something to buy - clothes, shoes, toys, books, games, clothes, shoes, toys... and that's without factoring in anything like holidays and um... university *eek*.

In her fab book the catchily titled ‘How To Afford Time Off with Your baby’ (available from Waterstones) full-time mum Becky Goddard-Hill gives 101 ways to ease the financial strain of having kids. Like me, she’s a fan of online grocery shopping to save money, stocking up and she also has some really cool tips on cutting the cost of children’s parties, saving for your baby’s future (don’t forget KidStart is a great way to do this) and cheaper Christenings, plus lots more.

You can also find expert tips  here and advice on how to make sure you and your friends are getting everything you're entitled to here.

Sunny days chasing the clouds away

Aren't these Sesame Street kids t-shirts from M&S fab? They also do Bert and Ernie too, and they're only £5 each, bargain!

They reminded me, though, that Sesame Street is probably the only kids' TV show that my sister and I used to watch when we were little that's still on. I wish they'd bring back Rentaghost - although I doubt our sophisticated children would appreciate it!

Which kids' shows would you like to see back on TV?

Disney's Princess and the Frog - review, special events and competition!

Back in December I gave you a sneaky peek at Disney's The Princess and the Frog - and the good news is it opens today!

Set in New Orleans in the 20s, The Princess and the Frog gives a new spin on an old classic. It's the story of Tiana, a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who dreams of owning her own restaurant. Unfortunately she gets mixed up with the handsome but rather cocky Prince Naveen and some voodoo magic which ends up turning both her and the prince into frogs! It's a wonderful, enchanting film, featuring a brilliant jazz-inspired soundtrack, instantly memorable songs and a return to 2D hand drawn animation. I guarantee the whole family will love it.

And make sure you pop along to your nearest Disney Store on Saturday mornings as they'll be hosting a whole range of special themed FREE events at their Princess and the Frog: Royal Academy, including animation, storytelling and etiquette lessons, plus extra events at half-term!

COMPETITION:
To celebrate the movie's release, we're giving you the chance to win an amazing Princess and the Frog prize pack. The prize includes a Kissing Naveen plush toy, a Louis plush toy, a Nintendo DS game, a Wii game, a Princess Tiana fancy dress costume, a fortune card game, a notebook, CD soundtrack, backpack, watch and sticker set.

How to enter: All you have to do is send the answer to the following question from your KidStart registered email address to competitions@kidstart.co.uk including your name, daytime telephone number, address by 17 February. If you are not a KidStart member click here to join.

Question: Which US city is Princess and the Frog set in?

Life on the ocean waves - why cruises are perfect for families

Like Linda from Have a Lovely Time , a few years ago we went on the holiday of a lifetime - the Disney cruise.

Until I'd actually been on a cruise, I thought they were for the rich and retired. Wrong! As we quickly discovered, they are the ideal way for families to holiday.

It's not just that you get to visit different places on one holiday without having to drive anywhere; or even that there is so much to do on board - swimming pools, spa treatments, kids' clubs, sports, all kinds of dining plans, endless entertainment, bars, and so on (honestly, they really are like floating resorts, these ships). But for me, a completely unexpected bonus was that sleeping on board a cruise ship is like being on a bed made of cotton wool clouds. The motion of the ocean lulls you all (yes, even the kids) to sleep. Bliss.

Virgin Holidays Cruises have some brilliant deals at the moment, including a a 14-night Orlando Stay & Caribbean Cruise from £899 per adult. Their sale ends Sunday - and don't forget you also get money back for your kids through KidStart.

Tell him about the honey, mummy

Yesterday Man of the House rang me from work and asked me to bid on an item for him on eBay. Now I have sold stuff on ebay, but I've never actually bought anything. 'I've never done this before,' I reminded him. 'I'm not really sure what I'm doing.'

'It's OK, I'll tell you what to do,' he said. 'OK,' I agreed. 'What are we bidding on?'

Turned out it was an enormous jar of Manuka honey, which, being from New Zealand, is one of MotH's favourite things (and it's quite pricey over here.) The bidding was already up to £3.50.

'OK, raise it by 50p,' he told me. I entered the figure - and almost immediately another bid went up. £4.40. 'What shall I do?' I asked, beginning to get a slight andrenalin rush. 'Shall I go higher?' 'Yes, go to £4.80,' he said. I felt like I was on Dickinson's Real Deal. I was in an actual bidding war. 'It's gone up to £5,' I said. 'Go higher,' MotH said. Three minutes left until the auction closed. I punched in £5.40. 'Well?' he said. 'Seems to be alright,' I said breathlessly. 'Think they've given up.' I was a natural. 'I'll keep checking.' 'Great, talk later,' he said. 'Don't lose my honey.'

I answered a couple of emails, and looked back at the clock on the screen. Still three minutes left. I went into the kitchen, switched on the kettle, came back. Three minutes left. I clicked on the image of the honey and suddenly the screen refreshed. 'Auction closed,' it said. 'Winning bid £6.'

Oops.

A favourite photo

Four of my favourite mummy bloggers - English Mum, Mummy Tips, New Mummy and Not Supermum - tagged me recently in the 'favourite photo' meme. But you know what? Choosing a favourite from the many stowed away in bags and boxes in our cupboards (for goodness sake don't try to open them) is really, really hard.

So as it's No 1 Son's birthday today I thought I'd share this one with you. It was taken on holiday in Antigua a few years ago. In between all the snorkelling, swimming and sunbathing we were lucky enough to visit a dolphin sanctuary. As you can see my little boy wasn't quite sure about cuddling up to the dolphin (they're actually wonderfully smooth to the touch and only smell a little fishy) but he didn't stop talking about the experience for ages afterwards, so I know it made an impression.

The best part though was watching them (the dolphins) chase each other in the sea. (And if you're dreaming of the Caribbean, don't forget Virgin Holidays and Thomas Cook  have brilliant offers on at the moment, plus you get money back for your kids through KidStart .)

Oh, and if my son should happen to read this... Happy Birthday. Please can you pick up the rubbish from your bedroom floor?
