'Come on Mum, don't be a wuss,' my son said as he helped me into a giant chair-lift made for 6. Being 10,000 feet up in the air is not something that comes naturally to me, but when you have kids sometimes you have to feel the fear so you can do the things you know they'll love.

And I have to say that once I got over my terror at being in such a high up, open space, being on the summit of Mount Titlis deep in snow in the middle of summer, was, to borrow a phrase, 'awesome'. (Although I drew the line against snow tubing and toboganning across the blimmin' thing. Needless to say the kids adored it.)

We were staying in the incredibly pretty city of Lucerne , an easy train ride from Zurich across chocolate country - snow-capped peaks, emerald green fields and the prettiest cows I've ever seen. Our hotel, the Seeburg had wonderful views of Lake Lucerne.

Of course we did the traditional Swiss things - we went to an alpine evening with some particularly dodgy horn-blowing, and tried fondue (incredibly moreish. This is not the place to diet). We also took a paddle-steamer trip across the Lake, and went swimming. (It's ice-cold but very refereshing).
If you haven't been away this summer and you're thinking about booking somewhere for the October half-term, Thomson Lakes have some great deals to Switzerland. And take it from me, that mountain air does wonders for your skin.
