On Saturday Harriet, 13, told me she'd compiled her dream dinner party guest list (her mum and dad were going round to some friends that evening, so I guess that's where the idea came from). 'Who's on it?' I asked, waiting to hear the usual suspects - RPatz, Jedward from XFactor, etc.
'Zac Efron,' she began. 'Yes,' I said, rolling my eyes. 'George Hamilton, Louis Walsh, Roy Cropper from Coronation Street and that old lady who was on last week's 10 Years Younger,' she finished.
'OK,' I said. 'I get the first one... but why the last four?' 'I feel sorry for them,' she said. 'I think it would be nice for them to have a lovely meal with some company.' Bless.
Staying in is still the new going out for most people I know right now - particularly when the weather's so hideous. (If you can't afford to host a dinner party, then a Pot Luck Supper - where everyone brings a dish - is a great alternative, because at least you get to socialise and eat someone else's cooking.)
Some friends of ours have recently started playing Come Dine With Me, where they take it in turns to cook for another couple and then 'rate' the evening in terms of food, atmosphere etc. It sounds like a really good idea. 'Except that Jo's really competitive,' my friend Simon said about his wife. 'I don't understand,' I said. 'Aren't you playing on the same side?' 'Oh no,' he replied. 'We compete against each other, too - it's much more fun that way.'
Who would you invite to your dream dinner party? I'd love to know.
