So we\u2019d like to invite you to read our four things you should know and watch a lovely video of a dad and daughter showing you what to do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1. What is Anaphylaxis?<\/span><\/h3>\n<strong> <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kidstart.co.uk\/StartSaving\/Pharmacy2U.aspx?i=3198&amp;outurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.awin1.com%2Fawclick.php%3Fmid%3D65%26id%3D73585%26clickref%3D%7B%7Bclickref%7D%7D%26p%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.pharmacy2u.co.uk%2Fproduct%2Fsearchresults%3FtxtSearch%3Dhay%2Bfever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Allergies<\/a><\/strong> occur when the body&#8217;s immune system reacts to a particular substance as though it&#8217;s harmful. Anaphylaxis is an extreme allergic reaction that can result in death. It is a medical emergency and needs urgent treatment. Anaphylaxis usually develops within minutes of exposure so you need to act fast.\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2. What are the signs of Anaphylaxis?<\/span><\/h3>\nInitial signs are similar to <strong> <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kidstart.co.uk\/StartSaving\/Boots.aspx?i=506&amp;outurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.awin1.com%2Fawclick.php%3Fmid%3D2041%26id%3D73585%26clickref%3D%7B%7Bclickref%7D%7D%26p%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.boots.com%2Fen%2FPharmacy-Health%2FHealth-shop%2FAllergy-hayfever%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mild allergies<\/a><\/strong>:\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kidstart.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Allergic-eyes-300x174.jpg\" alt=\"Symptom of Anaphylaxis - read, itchy eyes\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" \/>\n<ul>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 sneezing and an itchy, runny or blocked nose (allergic rhinitis)<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 itchy, red, watering eyes (conjunctivitis)<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and a cough<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 a raised, itchy, red rash (hives)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nBut can quickly develop:\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-12440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kidstart.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Hives-skin-rash-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Symptom of Anaphylaxis - Hives skin rash\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" \/>\n<ul>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 swollen red eyes, lips, hands and feet<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 feeling lightheaded, faint or confused<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 swelling of the mouth, throat or tongue<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 serious breathing and swallowing difficulties<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 Blue skin or lips<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 collapse and unconsciousness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nSo you need to act even if the symptoms seem mild at first.\n\nSource: <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/Conditions\/Allergies\/Pages\/Symptoms.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS Allergy Symptoms<\/a>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">3. What to do for Anaphylaxis<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>1. Remove the allergen trigger<\/strong><\/li>\n \t<li>\n<ul>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 If whatever triggered the allergic reaction &#8211; the allergen &#8211; is still present, remove it<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 Thoroughly clean skin that has been in contact with the allergen e.g. peanut butter from fingers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>2. An injection of a medicine called adrenaline should be given as soon as possible<\/strong><\/li>\n \t<li>\n<ul>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 People with a previous history of anaphylaxis will have an Adrenaline Auto-Injector with them (Emerade, EpiPen and Jext are brands prescribed in the UK).<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 Do not wait for symptoms to develop or for someone to arrive.<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 Inject into their outer thigh muscle (works through clothes) and hold in place for 10 seconds. (not easy with a small child so get help if possible)<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 If after 5 to 10 minutes the person still feels unwell, a second injection should be given in the opposite thigh.<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 A second dose may also be given if the person improves but becomes unwell again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>3. Call for an ambulance on 999<\/strong><\/li>\n \t<li>\n<ul>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 Do this whether or not adrenaline has been given.<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 Inform the emergency services that the patient is in anaphylaxis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>4. The person should rest<\/strong><\/li>\n \t<li>\n<ul>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 Ideally get them to lie flat, with their legs raised on a chair or a low table.<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 Adrenaline will raise the heart rate and may cause vomiting or anxiety. These side effects should reduce if they rest.<\/li>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 If they are having difficulty breathing, they should sit up to make breathing easier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>5. If the person is unconscious<\/strong><\/li>\n \t<li>\n<ul>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 You should move them to the recovery position &#8211; on their side, supported by one leg and one arm, with the head tilted back and the chin lifted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>6. If the person\u2019s breathing or heart stops<\/strong><\/li>\n \t<li>\n<ul>\n \t<li>&#8211; \u00a0 Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be performed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nFurther treatment will be carried out in hospital.\n\n<strong> Watch this video for advice on using an epi-pen on a toddler:<\/strong>\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/81acpicUrec?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">4. What you can do today<\/span><\/h3>\nThe most effective way of helping is being aware if your friend\u2019s or your children\u2019s friends have a serious allergy and helping them avoid exposure.
