One of my most cherished possessions is my grandad\u2019s letter that he wrote from the front lines of World War II to my father, who was born while he was away at war. He\u2019d been shipped off while my grandmother was pregnant and wasn\u2019t sure when he\u2019d get to meet his son. In the letter, he wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy son, although you cannot read this, I want mummy\nto kiss you on Christmas Morning at eight o\u2019clock, and I will feel that kiss,\nas sure, as if I was there myself<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My nana gave the letter to my father in 1982, and\nwhen he sadly passed away last year, my mum safely tucked it away in a shoe box\nin the attic; like most of us would do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s funny to think my son most likely won\u2019t have\nhandwritten letters like this to pass down to his grandson. I sometimes wonder,\nwhat will he have? Screenshots of WhatsApp messages don\u2019t have quite the same\nromanticism to them. What is the best way to capture and pass down the moments,\nmemories and sentiments that form our shared family history \u2013 especially in\nthis digital age?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Age of Hyper Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We live in a time of hyper communication – where we\ncan message anyone, pretty much anywhere in the world on 5 or 10 different\ndevices and on dozens of platforms. Convenient, but it can also feel a bit\nshallow and scattered. All the special milestones like birthdays and small, but\nspecial moments like that ridiculous outfit your toddler decided to wear to\nnursery are saved in the same WhatsApp feed sandwiched between the practical\nmessages asking your spouse not to forget the milk and to order the costume for\nWorld Book Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And beyond the strange mashup of sentimental and\nmundane, the other issue is family media is saved so disparately across\ndigital and analogue: in photo albums, dusty old VHS tapes in the loft, on\nFacebook albums, in WhatsApp, on photo streams, on Instagram and on\nmantelpieces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you stop to think about it, it\u2019s kind of a\nshame. Particularly when you compare it to how most of the other data in our\nlives \u2013 log-ins, photos, information, stories, etc \u2013 is stored and kept\nsecure in ways that are easy to retrieve, share and pass down; all the data\nexcept for the stuff that really matters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there is any data that is truly priceless and\nworth keeping secure more than any other, it is our family\u2019s. And we don\u2019t mean\nDOBs and birth weights, we mean videos, photos, voice recordings \u2013 all the\nforms of media that capture our families\u2019 memories, anecdotes, and the essence\nof our story \u2013 the personalities, quirks, and a shared sense of humour. It\u2019s\ntime we started putting the data that really matters somewhere that\u2019s fit for\npurpose, a secure digital home that all our loved ones can access. After all,\nit\u2019s priceless. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kin – A Digital Home for Everything That Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feeling up to the challenge, my co-founder Matt and\nI built Kin<\/a>, a private social\nmedia app, for just this purpose. It started when I wanted to find a way to\nleave future messages for my son and expanded into a private media space where\nfamilies chat with each other, post videos and photos on a shared timeline. A\nclosed, ad-free social network where the only people who have access to your\nphotos, videos and messages are your select family and friends. There\u2019s no\nadvertising and your data will never be for sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kin is much more than just a secure way to store\nyour families\u2019 data and digital legacy. It\u2019s a way to connect in the present\nwith family and friends through group chat and everyday updates. Kin provides a\nlink to the past through our Memorial Accounts which let you tag in photos and\ninclude family members who are gone, but not forgotten. And it provides a link\nto the future by allowing family to send Future Messages, a time capsule\nmessage you can send to unlock on the date of your choice. Celebrate a\nmilestone birthday or create a message to unlock the week your grandson\ngraduates University. Make a family future message together at New Year predicting\nwhat you\u2019ll all be up to in a year\u2019s time. There\u2019s no limit to the creativity\nyou can employ. Enjoy all of these features, advertising-free and knowing your\nfamily data is private, but easily searchable and shareable among your loved\nones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, Kin has not been built to replace<\/em> the\nplaces family data is kept per se. We don\u2019t expect anyone to chuck their family\nalbums and delete all their social accounts the day they download Kin. But we\nbuilt Kin with the purpose of storing and sharing memories and legacies all in\none easy-to-use private digital space. We want Kin to give you a better way for\neveryone in the family, no matter where they live, to have access to your\nshared family story, connect with each other in a central spot and create a\ndigital legacy that you and future generations can enjoy. We built Kin to meet\nthe ever-evolving needs of families and friends as close as family when it\ncomes to connecting with each other and in relation to storing, searching and\nsecuring data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
