As it’s Child Safety Week, Liz has invited me to write\u00a0a guest post.\r\nDid you know that every week in the UK five children die from unnecessary accidents \u2013 and over 2000 children to go to A&E? Child Safety Week is really a reminder to us all to be attentive and watchful of our children throughout the stages.\u00a0 This years\u2019 theme is Make Time For Safety.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nSo, what can we do to keep our kids out of danger without wrapping them up in cotton wool?\r\n\r\nWe obviously have to think \u2018age appropriate\u2019 \u2013 for babies and toddlers it\u2019s about being one step ahead. Babies quickly become mobile and strong willed –\u00a0 usually around the age of 6-9 months! So accident prevention is essential. Stair gates and cupboard locks, smash proof glass and bathroom cupboards locks and medicines place high up on a shelf are all important \u2013 every child is different in nature but all are inquisitive and their curiosity can often lead to potential accidents, if precautions are not in place. Of course this is never a substitute for an adult career to be with small babies \/toddlers at all times.\r\n\r\nWhy not try the Childproofing quiz<\/a> (scroll down to the bottom of the page) and see for yourself how knowledgeable you are about safety in the home.\r\n\r\nFor children who are a bit older and can understand how accidents happen \u2013 here is some advice :\r\n\r\n1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Communication is key.<\/strong> Simply explain to children about the risks. If they are racing around the house or jumping on a trampoline \u2013 tell them what could happen (appropriate to their age) and how they should behave.\r\n2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Keep kids interested<\/strong> \u2013 this isn\u2019t to say they need to be stimulated at all times because they need their down time in front of the TV \u2013 but a bored child will find things to do that may lead to risk.\r\n3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Develop good self esteem<\/strong> \u2013 a child who is not happy and feels less than good about themselves will feel less inclined to stay safe. Help them identify a strong identity and take appropriate action if they\u2019re having emotional difficulties.\r\n4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lead by example<\/strong> \u2013 children are like sponges. If you want him\/her to sit at the table and not lick their knife then show them that it is not appropriate \u2013 likewise slamming doors, shouting\u2026\r\n5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prevention is better than cure<\/strong> \u2013 ensure that you have the appropriate measures in place to avoid and to act should an accident occur \u2013 are you up-to-date with first aid,\u00a0 out of reach, fire blanket, front door lock high up, outdoor water such as ponds or swimming pools fence protected.\r\n6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Get involved with your children\u2019s lives and friends<\/strong> \u2013 allow their friends to come to your home, be their taxi, know their likes and dislikes, give them space but always be there.\r\n\r\nWhat are your top tips for keeping our kids safe?\r\n\r\n*For a full selection of safety products for your home, visit the Childalert Baby Catalogue<\/a>.
