{"id":1913,"date":"2009-10-08T13:07:00","date_gmt":"2009-10-08T13:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.livingwithkids.co.uk\/whats-your-favourite-childrens-poem\/"},"modified":"2013-06-24T13:13:31","modified_gmt":"2013-06-24T13:13:31","slug":"whats-your-favourite-childrens-poem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kidstart.co.uk\/blog\/whats-your-favourite-childrens-poem\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s your favourite children&#8217;s poem?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>  It&#39;s National Poetry Day today, which is the perfect excuse to read some poetry with your kids, or encourage them to write some of their own.   <\/p>\n<p>              <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 0pt none; margin: 10px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.livingwithkids.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/dancingcat_AxelScheffler_081009.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"154\" height=\"176\" \/>&nbsp;\n<td width=\"5%\">\n<p>     My personal favourite children&#39;s poem has always been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nonsenselit.org\/Lear\/ns\/pussy.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Owl And The Pussycat<\/a>&nbsp;by Edward Lear. I can remember having to learn this as a kid and thinking how <em>long<\/em> it was. But now, as a grown-up, I see it&#39;s not actually very long at all. My favourite line is still &#39;they took some honey, and plenty of money.&#39; What a lovely thought. We also enjoy Spike Milligan in this house (I was lucky enough to meet him when I was small, and he autographed books for both me and my younger sister. When I looked at mine afterwards he&#39;d written &#39;Stop fighting with your sister&#39; and in hers he&#39;d written &#39;You will live to be 100&#39;.)      <\/p>\n<p>  Which poems do you and your children enjoy? I&#39;d love to know. And to help encourage your kids to write some poems of their own, here are two fantastic competitions. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenspoetrybookshelf.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">The Old Possum Children&#39;s Poetry Competition<\/a> for 7-11-year-olds is judged by Michael Rosen, and 5 to 14-year-olds can enter the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpoetryday.co.uk\/walker-books\/\" target=\"_blank\">Walker Books Children&#39;s Poetry Competition<\/a>.
