{"id":6398,"date":"2012-10-30T09:10:52","date_gmt":"2012-10-30T09:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.livingwithkids.co.uk\/?p=6398"},"modified":"2013-06-24T12:51:49","modified_gmt":"2013-06-24T12:51:49","slug":"child-benefit-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kidstart.co.uk\/blog\/child-benefit-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Child Benefit Cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n\n<strong>Millions of parents around the UK will be getting a dreaded letter this week from HM Revenue and Customs spelling out how their child benefit (currently \u00a320.30 a week for the first child and \u00a313.40 for all subsequent children)\u00a0could be cut in January 2013.<\/strong>\n\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.livingwithkids.co.uk\/child-benefit-cuts\/child-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6399\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6399\" title=\"child\" src=\"http:\/\/www.livingwithkids.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/child.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a>\n\nThe cuts and the letter explaining it all basically says households where at least one person earns more than \u00a350,000 will have the benefit reduced, with\u00a0the highest earner in the household paying an &#8220;income tax charge&#8221; equivalent to some or all of the amount they currently get. This means if you have two children you will effectively have lost half the benefit by the time you are earning \u00a355,000, and the lot by the time you hit \u00a360,000.\u00a0And for households with two children, where one earns \u00a360,000 a year this is the equivalent of a 4.5% pay cut.\n\nThe cuts are so unfair in this climate where we&#8217;re all struggling to get by for a whole host of reasons including the fact that a couple together can earn around \u00a390,000 (\u00a345k each) and still be entitled to the complete child benefit, while a family \u00a330,000 poorer will lose it completely.\n\nFor me it seems ridiculous and also incredibly unfair that the government are not assessing household income as a whole. \u00a360k may seem like a dream wage but if you&#8217;re the only earner in a family of four, paying a mortgage\/rent, income tax of around \u00a32,500 a month and council tax, the loss is huge.\n\nAnd let&#8217;s face it not all single income households are single income by choice. At the moment I know plenty of parents desperately searching for work and desperately needing their child benefit to pay for weekly shops and clothes for their kids.
