During the summer holidays, my two eldest girls are going to\u00a0\u2019Kids Club\u2019 three days a week so that I can continue to work.\u00a0 Each week there is a different theme, and this week it\u2019s \u2018Comic Books\u2019.<\/h3>\r\nWhen they came home yesterday, full of energy and\u00a0shouting their enthusiasm for how much fun they\u2019d had,\u00a0they eagerly waved pieces of paper under my nose\u00a0showing me the superheros that they\u2019d drawn and coloured in.\r\n\r\nThis morning,\u00a0after I\u2019d taken my daughter Lola to nursery and the other two had finished their breakfast,\u00a0Ella wanted to draw another superhero to take in to show her\u00a0teachers.\u00a0 All was quiet for a short while and then she began getting\u00a0frustrated because\u00a0her picture wasn\u2019t turning out how she wanted it to.\u00a0 She proceeded to get really quite\u00a0cross (with herself), throwing her pencil across the table and bursting into tears.\r\n
\u201cI can\u2019t do it!\u201d she wailed.\u00a0 This is quite a common occurrence in our house, and\u00a0if I\u2019m completely honest I don\u2019t always have the time or the patience to help her understand what she\u2019s thinking and feeling and help her work through it.<\/blockquote>\r\n

Today though, I decided that I did.<\/h3>\r\nSo I gave her a hug and sat down at the table next to her.\u00a0 I told her the story of Thomas Edison\u00a0trying to invent\u00a0the lightbulb.\u00a0 I asked her how many times she thought he might have tried to do it before he got it\u00a0to work.\u00a0 Ella stopped sniffing and\u00a0looked at me, and I could\u00a0practically see her brain working as she worked out in\u00a0her head how many times he might have attempted to create his invention.\u00a0 \u201cFive tries\u201d she said, confidently.\u00a0 My other daughter Mimi\u2019s curiosity had been piqued by this point, so she sidled over shyly and\u00a0guessed 20 and then 30 tries.\u00a0 When I told them it had taken Edison 10,000 tries before he\u2019d got his idea to work properly, their\u00a0eyes widened in astonishment.\u00a0 \u201cSo even though it didn\u2019t work all those times,\u201d I said \u201che kept on trying and kept on trying, because he believed that he could do it.\u00a0 And then, finally, when he tried something he\u00a0hadn\u2019t tried before,\u00a0he did it!\u201d.\r\n\r\nThis sparked off a conversation about\u00a0how\u00a0she could keep trying the same thing over and over, and it would keep on\u00a0turning out\u00a0in a way that she didn\u2019t want, or she could try and do it differently and maybe it would start to end up how she wanted it to be.\u00a0 \u201cBecause if we keep on doing what we\u2019ve always done, we\u2019ll keep on ending up with what we\u2019ve always had\u201d I said.\u00a0 \u201cWhat are you talking about Mummy?\u201d she asked impatiently, eager to get on with doing her drawing.\u00a0 (Ok, so maybe that suggestion might have been a bit much for a 6 year old at 8am on a Tuesday morning!)\r\n\r\nAs Ella and Mimi settled back down in their seats to continue with their pictures,\u00a0we got talking about superheros and superpowers.\u00a0 I\u00a0commented that if I was a superhero my superpower would be the ability to help everybody find happiness.\u00a0 Mimi said her superpower would be saving people from danger, \u201cespecially if rocks are falling on\u00a0top of them Mummy, I\u2019d push them out of the way\u201d.\r\n\r\nI asked Ella what her superpower would be.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t answer,\u00a0just carried on absentmindedly\u00a0doodling on the paper in paper in front of her.\u00a0 I left her to it and quietly went back to getting their bags ready for Kids Club as there were only a few minutes left before we needed to leave.\r\n\r\nA couple of seconds later I felt a little tug on my hand.\u00a0 I crouched down to her level and she put her hands on my shoulders and whispered in my ear \u201cIf I\u00a0had a superpower Mummy, it would be to help people not give up when something is hard or when something doesn\u2019t go the way you want it to\u201d.\r\n\r\nThen she showed me this picture of \u2018Mr. Don\u2019t Give Up\u2019, her superhero:\r\n\r\n

So now I\u2019m going to ask you the same question I asked my girls:\u00a0 If you were a superhero (and you already are, all of you!), what would your superpower be?<\/h3>\r\n
