Here’s some bedtime reading that might help to ease the transition; a list of great books about going to school. I’ve listed ones that will appeal to young kids plus a couple aimed at 9-10 year olds on the brink of starting secondary school. I’ve even included one for grown-ups!

1. Oh My Baby, Little One by Kathi Appelt and Jane Dyer.

A sweet story about Baby Bird who has to say goodbye to his mum each morning. Even though they both feel sad, love stays with mum and Baby Bird all day long. My daughters loved looking out for the little hearts that are hidden on every page. Heartwarming.

2. I am Too Absolutely Small for School (Charlie and Lola) by Lauren Child

A must for Charlie and Lola fans, this book deals with Lola’s fears around the first day of school. All beautifully illustrated as usual by Ms Child.

3. The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn

This New York Times Best Seller is an adorable story that follows Chester Raccoon on his first day at school. The book deals with separation anxiety beautifully and is very reassuring for kids and parents alike.

4. Wemberly Worried by Kevin Henkes

We love Kevin Henkes in our house and Wemberly is another brilliant character who worries about everything, especially her first day at school. When Wemberly finally starts school however, everything changes for the better.

5. Harry and the Dinosaurs Go to School (Harry and His Bucketful of Dinosaurs) by Adrian Reynolds

A nervous Harry goes to school without his usual bucketful of friends and has a bit of a miserable time until his dinosaur mates come to the rescue.

6. Once Upon an Ordinary School Day by Colin McNaughton

Fabulous teacher Mr Gee brightens up an ordinary, boring school day with his music and creativity. A great book for slightly older children, encouraging them to write and use their imagination.

7. Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes

An absolute family favourite in our house, Lilly takes her newest toy, a purple plastic into school with hilarious consequences. The depiction of her groovy teacher, Mr. Slinger, is wonderful!

8. First Term at Malory Towers by Enid Blyton

Although many commentators wonder whether Blyton’s books have any relevance to modern readers, there is still something captivating about these stories of Darell Rivers and her life at boarding school Malory Towers.

9. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by JK Rowling

For older readers, this list would not be complete without a nod to JK Rowling’s tales of jiggery, pokery and magic at Hogwart’s School.

And finally, one for parents…

10.The Starting School Survival Guide: Everything you need to know when your child starts primary school by Sarah Ebner.

Author Sarah Ebner is a mother of two and author of The Times blog School Gate. The book is filled with advice from learning what a number line is to interacting with teachers and other parents. It contains everything a parent needs to know in order to navigate the next seven or so years of their child’s primary school years.

Header Image Credit : eren {sea+prairie}

Happy autumn term everyone!

The new school year has begun and parents and children are immersed in the world of chalk and protractors.
