“When I go to do the weekly shop with my daughters Holly and Rose we play a
game! If they can find 5 items from the shopping list ‘on deal’ or
cheaper/equivalent brand product etc, then what they save goes into their ‘piggy
bank’ as they are saving for Christmas!
|
|
|
This keeps them entertained as well as saving money, not to mention improving
their numeracy skills and giving them a sense of how much things cost!! Saves
208” annually”

Sharon has just saved 500 for her kids
Get your kids involved with growing your own veggies in the garden or in window boxes if space is limited. writing the kids name on a stick and keeping it with one or more plants will encourage them to look after and chart there plants growth. this helps you save money on the grocery run and helps your children understand and value nature more. dont forget you dont have to eat all the vegiies grown at once, they can be frozen for later use and if you grow fruits those can be made into jams or preserves by your and your kids.

Sharon has just saved 156 for her holiday in the sun
For tiny treats for kids - instead of buying them a packet of sweets - put a few pick n mix into a tiny platic pot (ideal reuse for weaning pots). My kids think that chocolate buttons only come in 3's so also stops them eating too many sweets

Coral has just saved 200 for her baby's first birthday
Use washable wipes rather than disposable wet wipes, they clean better, you use fewer at a time, and can be thrown into your normal wash and they don't need to be dried before they are used again.

Instead of buying jars of baby food cook your own meals and put them in a blender then freeze in ice cube trays. That way there's minimum waste and you can increase the amount of cubes as baby gets older.

Delphine has just saved 200 for her new bathroom
I have saved 60 on my 6-monthly water bill with: - a \"save a flush\" in the toilet over 6 months (free from most water companies) - a washball for all my laundry (2 - 3 loads per week) over 4 months. I also saved on washing powder (I only use a tiny bit in each load, I like the smell) and electricity (does not need rincing) - a \"shower smart\" (free from EAGA)over 1 month I look forward to seeing my next bill to know how much more I have saved with the washing ball and the shower smart.

When we give our chidren their pocket money will deduct 10% for their savings account and 10% for charity. Then in December they get to choose how they want to donate the charity money by looking at websites like Oxfam Unwrapped and Wateraid. It shows them how even a little bit of money can make a big difference and how lucky they are!

Have a clearout, pull out everything potentially ebayable and put it on ebay on a free listings day. Alternative, post it on gumtree. Trust me, there will be takers. I have manage to raised over 100 by doing this whenn money was tight whilst on maternity leave. Most was clothes that not longer fit.

Dont buy any sweets or crisps into the house - if the kids want some then they can walk to the shops and buy something - amazing how often they will put up with healthy food rather than trek to the shops

Samantha has just saved 520 for the future
We give the children half their pocket money to spend and half to save. The idea is that they learn to put money away for the future and they usually save their spending money week to week to buy something more immediate.

Jo has just saved 1200 for Lauren and Emily
Meal planning - you cant beat it! At the beginning of each week, take a look in your fridge/freezer to see what you can use for the coming week. Then make a shopping list for anything else that you need. That way, you are only shopping for what you need, and are not tempted by the special offers down the aisles!! Also - never ever go shopping while you are hungry - all sorts of unnecessary luxuries end up in the trolley!

Rachel has just saved 180 for a deposit on a new house
You can save money by using half your usual laundry detergent and replacing it with the same amount of soda crystals in your washing machine drawer. This way you can use premium brand washing powders/liquids that often don't require separate fabric conditioners and make them go twice as far!
