Child health – Milk formula causing constipation

Q: My 3 week old baby has been diagnosed with reflux. They have changed his milk to Enfamil A.R but since this happened he has bad constipation. I've tried to give him water between feeds but he doesn't  like to take it. What should I do to help him get rid of the constipation?

Answer from Dr Clare Heggie:

The new milk is likely to be the cause of his constipation although it will probably help the reflux.  Other than offering your baby frequent drinks of cooled / boiled water in a bottle (he will probably eventually start to accept it)  there is not very much else you can do on your own.  I recommend that you go back to your doctor to discuss the constipation.  He or She may offer an alternative formula for your baby to try in the first instance.
