Every year parents spend higher amounts to get their children ready for back to school. One in nine parents spend over £900 on back to school essentials, KidStart takes a look at how to save on your spending.
According to the Children’s Society, the cost of school uniform alone reached the average of £316 per child in secondary school and £251 for primary school in 2015, 5% higher than in 2014 – twice the level of an average annual salary increase!
We’ve looked at some ways to keep back to school costs to a minimum:
Shrink the cost by getting up to 20% back from your spending
Join KidStart for free and you’ll get up to 20% off your spend back to your children’s savings account – you just need to access your favourite retailers through our website and shop as normal.
Make sure you download our savings prompt which will alert you on Google and the retailers websites when KidStart savings are available.
Make a list of what to buy
Organisation and planning has always been the key to saving. Plan in advance and make a list of what needs buying and what you can recycle from last year – this way you’ll make sure you don’t end up spending on unnecessary things.
Don’t wait for the very last minute
Retailers normally begin their back to school promotions months in advance – sometimes even before the school break! Prices will go up as September approaches, so buying your school uniform in July can save you a large amount of money.
Check out Marks and Spencer (1.5% KidStart savings) adjust-a-cuff on blazers and the John Lewis (3% KidStart Savings) adjustable waist uniforms with fabric protection meaning clothes that will last and ‘grow with your children – plus no sewing required!
Compare prices online
We work with more than 1,200 retailers – that means we top up your children’s savings every time you buy at one of them! Just spend some time comparing offers and looking for promotional codes that suit your family.
