Arghhh who’s put the heating back on again? While I’m hoping that there will soon come a day when I can turn the heating off for at least a whole month (you can but hope) I know we are still paying a huge amount each month for last winter’s energy bills. In fact we’re paying so much that I’m considering knitting everyone in the house an extra thick jumper for autumn so we don’t have to turn on the gas until at least November.
Of course, the reality is the sun doesn’t really stop the huge usage of energy in our homes. If like me you work from home, there’s computer use to contend with, and the inevitable round of dishwashers, tumble dryers and washing machines on a constant daily go. As for the environmental impact of my family’s energy using habits, I cringe when I think of it.

£610 figure is based on a 3 bed semi-detached with no existing insulation. Source; Energy Saving Trust. £610 is the maximum value of insulation that may be installed without charge. If you are not the homeowner, you must seek the owner’s written permission before arranging installation. Not all properties will be suitable for insulation. You will not be eligible for free insulation if you already have pre-existing cavity wall insulation or loft insulation that is more than 60mm thick, or if we are unable to insulate at least two thirds of the total loft space or wall cavities. Funding is not available for under tile insulation or where there is already more than 150mm/6 inches of existing loft insulation. If you have a large or non-standard property, or if we need to use specialist systems or equipment to carry out the work, then there will be a charge, but you will be told about this at the time of the free no obligation suitability assessment (you will not be able to benefit from the free insulation offer unless you agree to the additional work and costs). Offer open to applications between 31 March to 30 September 2012 and installations must be completed by 30 November 2012. Offer can be withdrawn at any time due to circumstances beyond our reasonable control. Currently only available for properties in mainland Great Britain and the Isle of Wight.
